Morgan Stanley and Advent Bring New Technology to Investors

New York, April 17, 2001 - Advent Software, Inc. (Nasdaq: ADVS) and Morgan Stanley (NYSE: MWD) announced today a strategic agreement that will help Morgan Stanley develop financial tools and services that provide individual clients with customized portfolio reports, online investment analytics, and a more interactive approach to financial advice.

Under the agreement, Morgan Stanley plans to participate in Advent TrustedNetwork, an electronic clearinghouse that collects account data from more than 50 participating financial institutions, consolidates it, and delivers the information online to recipient institutions as authorized by their clients.

Morgan Stanley is the first global financial institution to agree to join Advent TrustedNetwork as both a data provider and recipient. The agreement will enable Morgan Stanley to provide clients with customized views of all their accounts with Morgan Stanley and other banks and brokerages. In addition, the Advent Office suite of software products will be available to Morgan Stanley to use as a technology platform for participating in the network. Morgan Stanley intends to integrate products from Advent TrustedNetwork and Advent Office and plans to introduce jointly developed products to its financial advisors and clients later this year.

"Morgan Stanley clients are smart and computer-savvy, and our firm is committed to implementing the best technology available to help our clients and our financial advisors monitor and manage investment portfolios," said James Tousignant, Executive Vice President for Business Development and E-commerce for the Morgan Stanley Individual Investor Group. "Later this year, Advent TrustedNetwork will help us provide rich and robust account information to Morgan Stanley clients in very creative and dynamic ways."

Morgan Stanley has more than 14,000 financial advisors and investment representatives in branch offices nationwide and, last year, was the first brokerage firm to deliver online aggregated account information to its clients.

"Morgan Stanley's planned participation in Advent TrustedNetwork is an important milestone in the evolution of the network and validates both the importance of this service and the strength of Advent's software platform as a dynamic solution for major Wall Street institutions," said Collin Cohen, Executive Vice President, Corporate and New Business Development, of Advent Software. "We developed Advent TrustedNetwork to enable our clients to provide the best possible service to the investing public, and to support the relationship between advisors and their clients. We're thrilled to have Morgan Stanley on board."
